The great Al Foster celebrates his birthday with this special star-studed ensemble. Featuring trumpeter Nicholas Payton, pianist David Hazeltine, bassist Dezron Douglas, and from the first three nights alto saxophonist Vincent Herring. Foster, whose transcendent grooves and rhythmic textures were the pulse of Miles Davis’ bands throughout the ’70s and ’80s, is known for making everyone around him sound better. In his autobiography, Miles related that he hired Al because, “he could set up shit for everyone else to play off and could keep the groove going forever.” Of course, his career has many other highlights including extensive work with Sonny Rollins, Herbie Hancock, and Joe Henderson. Sonny called Al “the last of the great living jazz drummers” and Henderson reportedly said Al was his favorite drummer, period.
